Devices for MojoPac
What devices can I use to install MojoPac?
MojoPac can be installed on any USB 2.0 compliant storage device. This page provides you with guidelines on how to select the best device for installing MojoPac based on your usage model and application needs. The great news is that storage devices are getting cheaper by the day and their capacities are increasing rapidly - today you can buy a 40GB drive for $40 ($1/GB). It is truly a great time to experience MojoPac.
Please note that some devices which show the sticker of USB 2.0 may not be compliant with the standard. The table at the end of this section summarizes some of devices you can use for your MojoPac. To find out if your device is USB 2.0 compliant, you need to contact your hardware provider directly.Would the performance of my device affect my MojoPac experience?
Absolutely. MojoPac itself does not add any noticeable overhead to your applications. However, the hardware you install MojoPac on might affect your performance. As you know, applications run much faster on PCs with higher-speed processors. Similarly, MojoPac and applications running on MojoPac perform much faster if you choose your device carefully. We go over some criteria for device selection below.
How much storage do I need?
When calculating the storage capacity you need for your device, keep these two guidelines in mind:
- What applications do you want to install on your MojoPac PC? Each application requires a specific amount of storage (Ex: iTunes + QuickTime require 110MB, MS Office needs about 600MB, Adobe Photoshop needs about 600-900MB, many games need about 1-3GB). Remember that you also need to carry the data associated with that application on your MojoPac device. As an example many people have very large email .pst files (1-2GB).
- You will always need more capacity than you originally think you do. Trust us - the moment you start experiencing the joy of MojoPac, you will want to carry more and more applications and data and set yourself completely free from your PC.
Mojo Devices:
iPods:
Your iPod is a great device to carry your digital Mojo. With capacities from 2GB to 80GB, an iPod has the potential to be all the PC you need. And by adding MojoPac to your iPod, you can install iTunes and QuickTime and never need to be dependent on a specific PC for accessing music and video downloads or Podcasts.
MojoPac can be installed on iPods, Video iPods, iPod nanos, and iPod minis. MojoPac can not be installed on iPod Shuffle. In general, a larger capacity iPod (the 30GB - 80GB iPods and Video iPods) provide higher performance and much more Mojo capacity than smaller iPod nanos. So we recommend you to use a 30-80GB iPod to install and carry MojoPac. Remember you are sharing your iPod between your music/videos and your Mojo applications. Please remember to speed-up your MojoPac iPod for optimum experience.
USB Hard Drives:
USB hard drives (especially the more portable ones with 2.5'', 1.8'' or 1'' drives) are ideal for carrying your Mojo. Not only do they provide larger capacity to install more applications (2.5'' drives have up to 160GB, 1.8'' hard drives have up to 80GB, and 1'' hard drives have up to 12 GB today), they are generally higher performance (especially the 2.5'' and 1.8'' ones) than flash drives.
For high performance gamers and professionals with demanding applications and large files (such as developer and multimedia applications), we recommend 2.5'' drives such as the Seagate USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drives or Western Digital Passport USB 2.0 External Hard Drives. If you are a power user, you can purchase the drives separately and place them in USB casing of your choice for a more pocket-size form factor.
The best combinations for performance and capacity are 2.5'' 7200 RPM drives together with external USB cases if necessary (Hitachi and Seagate/Maxtor currently have up to 100GB in this category).
In the 1.8'' category, Toshiba has 60GB and 80GB drives that you can purchase and place in external USB cases.
For people with more focus on small form factor, we recommend the 1 inch Memorex 8GB Mega Travel drive.
USB Flash Drives:
You should choose a USB flash drive if small form factor is what matters most to you. However, flash devices do not offer the best price/GB compared with hard drives. And they are generally lower in performance and have shorter life span. Moreover, the largest USB flash you can find in the market is around 4GB, which is OK for some applications but definitely not sufficient to carry your games, or entire work environment. In comparison, a small 1'' USB hard drive has already reached 12GB in capacity and you can purchase it for equivalent price of a 4GB flash, at only a slightly larger form factor.
If you would like to use flash devices to carry MojoPac, make sure the drive is large enough to carry the applications you like to have on your MojoPac. Microsoft Office requires about 600MB, so a 1GB flash drive is too small if you also would want to carry your email .pst and all your Powerpoint documents with you. On the other hand, if the only applications you like to use are Firefox and your IM clients, 1GB could be a good choice. We recommend using 2GB or larger for your MojoPac PC.
Only higher-performance and higher quality USB flash drives can be Mojo Devices. Some suggestions are Memorex, Imation, OCZ, Sandisk and Lexar. Most cheap and give-away USB Flash devices are too low-quality and low-performance for you to carry your Mojo on, and are likely to fail. Therefore MojoPac cannot be used on these devices.
Cell Phones:
Several cell phones have added large embedded storage that can be used to carry MojoPac, and this trend is catching on. Two examples are the Nokia N91 (4GB internal storage) and the Samsung i310 (8GB internal storage). These phones have USB connections so you can directly connect them to your PC and install your Mojo.
